The first image of Oscar Isaac in the film In The Hand Of Dante

According to CinemaDrame news agency, The first image of Oscar Isaac in the film In The Hand Of Dante, directed by Julian Schnabel, was unveiled simultaneously with its entry to the Venice Film Festival. Alberto Barbera, the artistic director of the Venice Festival, stated in a press conference that Schnabel, after a decade of effort to direct this film, must have fought with the producers not to shorten it. Barbera said: “Most films run between two hours and 15 minutes to two hours and 30 minutes. This is a new international standard that, of course, worries those who plan the schedule because fitting all of them into the program complicates our work.”

This 150-minute film is based on a novel by Nick Tosches and narrates the emergence of a manuscript version of Dante’s Divine Comedy on the black market, when student smugglers summon Nick to verify the book’s authenticity. Nick, however, deceives the mafia and steals the book. He embarks on a dark and violent journey with his lover Giulietta, which closely resembles Dante’s own life: a man trapped in a loveless marriage who fled Sicily to create his greatest work. The narrative structure of In The Hand Of Dante links the 14th and 21st centuries and features a demonic character played by Benjamin Clementine, who sees both past and future. Clementine also contributes to the film’s music and joins other actors such as John Malkovich and Louis Cancelmi.

At age 18, Dante met the Italian poet Guido Cavalcanti, who urged him to go to Venice and introduce himself to a wise master played by Martin Scorsese, seeking advice for writing the Divine Comedy.

The film was shot in the cities of Sicily, Venice, Rome, and Verona. Scorsese, alongside John Kellyc, Francesco Melzi, and Schnabel, serves as producer. Roman Vasyanov, known for Suicide Squad and David Ayer’s Fury, is the project’s cinematographer. Schnabel’s last feature film was At Eternity’s Gate (2018), which, after its Venice screening, earned Willem Dafoe an Oscar nomination.
